${\mathbf{KMNO}}_{\mathbf{4}}$ is called potassium permanganate.  It isa solid oxidising agent. 

Oxidative cleavageleads to the formation of 1,2-diol, which leads to the construction of carboxylic acid,which changes the color of   to brown.

The colour changes from purple to brown, and diol leads to producing two adjacent alcoholic groups.

It is also one of the tests to detect the presence of a double bond in the compound or distinguish between saturated and unsaturated compounds.
