Answer

Answer

The reagent used in the reaction is 1. HgOAC2, H2O 2. NaBH4:

1Step 1: Alcohol

The compounds which contain hydroxyl group as a functional group is referred to as alcohol. The general formula for alcohol is CnH2n+1OH. In IUPAC naming, we add the suffix ol with the word root.

2Step 2: Classification of alcohol

It is classified as:

  1. Primary alcohol: In which one alkyl group is attached to a carbon atom attached with a hydroxyl group.
  2. Secondary alcohol: In this, two alkyl groups are attached.
  3. Tertiary alcohol: In tertiary alcohol, three alkyl groups are attached.
3Step 3: Reagent used in the reaction

Oxymercuration- demercuration reaction is most commonly used for the addition of hydroxyl group to a double bond of a cycloalkene ring. In this reaction, the cyclic mercurian ion will form with the help of the reagent mercury(II) acetate. That carbon- mercury bond will reduce in the presence of sodium borohydride, and that reaction is known as the demercuration reaction. Also, we can do this reaction by acid- Catalyzed hydration reaction, but in that acidic conditions are used, therefore, we will not use this mechanism for the reaction.

Hence, the reagent used in the reaction is 1. HgOAC2, H2O 2. NaBH4:
