Question 1.45

Question

The distance between two adjacent peaks on a wave is called the wavelength. (a) The wavelength of a beam of ultraviolet light is 247 nanometres (nm). What is its wavelength in meters? (b) The wavelength of a beam of red light is 6760 pm. What is its wavelength in angstroms( Å )?

Answer

Answer

  1. The wavelength of the UV beam in meters is 2.47 × 10-7 m.
  2. The wavelength of the beam of red light in angstrom is 67.6 Å.
1Part (a)

A UV beam has a wavelength of  λ =247 nm. To convert the value to nanometres, use the formula 1nm = 10-9m .

λ = 247nm × 10-9m1nm   = 247nm × 10-9m   = 2.47 × 10-7m

Hence

the wavelength of the UV beam in meters

 is 2.47 × 10-7m .

2Part (b)

 The wavelength of a red light beam is λ = 6760 pm . Convert the value in Pico meters to angstroms using the following formula:

1pm =10-12m,  1010 Å=1mλ = 6760pm×10-12m1pm×1010 Å1m   = 6760 × 10-12×1010 Å   = 67.6 Å

Hence, the wavelength of the beam of red light in angstrom is 67.6 Å .
