Step 2 - Find a whole number whose square is 4

Since, $2^2=4$ 

So, a whole number whose square is 4 is 2 

Step 3 - Simplify - 4

Since, square of 2 is 4

So, square root of 4 is 2, $\sqrt{4}=2$$\sqrt{4}=2$

Multiply both sides by $-1$

 $\begin{array}{c}\left(-1\right)\times \sqrt{4}=\left(-1\right)\times 2\\ -\sqrt{4}=-2\end{array}$

Thus, value of $-\sqrt{4}$  is $-2$
