Q 136

Question

Explain how to find the value of sin390o and cos-45o

using the unit circle.

Step-by-Step Solution

Verified
Answer

The value of :-

sin390o=12 and

cos(-450)=12

1Step 1. Given Information

We have to find the value of sin390o and cos-450.

We have to use unit circle to find these values.

2Step 2. Explanation of unit circle

The unit circle is a circle whose radius is 1 unit.Also center of unit circle is at the origin. (As shown in following figure) :-

For any point x,y lies on a unit circle :-

x=cosθy=sinθ

where θ is the angle between the  points 1,0 and (x,y).

3Step 3. To find values

We know that maximum angle at unit circle is 360o.

By using periodic property of sine function we can write :-

 sin(390o)=sin(360o+30o)sin(390o)=sin(30o)

The angle 30o lies in first quadrant and the point associated with this angle is 32,12

We know that  sinθ=y

So that :-

sin390o=12

Also we know that cosine function is an even function. This gives us :-

cos(-45o)=cos45o

The angle 45o lies in first quadrant and the point associated with this angle is 12,12

We know that cosθ=x

So that :-

cos(-450)=12.
