Q. 10

Question

How do you subtract two vectors algebraically? Geometrically

Step-by-Step Solution

Verified
Answer

u=x1i+y1j   and v=x2i+y2ju-v=x1-x2i+(y1-y2)

1Step 1: Subtract two vectors algebraically

Let two vectors are,

u=x1i+y1j   and v=x2i+y2ju-v=x1-x2i+(y1-y2)

Example:

u=3i+8j  and  v=2i-4ju-v=3i-2i+8j+4j          =i+12j

2Step 2: Subtract two vectors geometrically

To subtract two vectors geometrically we position their initial points together, as we see in the right-hand figure. The vector u  v extends from the terminal point of v to the terminal point of u.

Example:

u=3i+8j  and  v=2i-4ju-v=3i-2i+8j+4j          =i+12j
